We're moving to San Luis Obispo in August or shortly thereafter. It's an exciting opportunity we've been mulling over for seven or eight months. But why would we leave Ukiah, a place that we love, in which we've invested so much (time, emotion, money), where we met, where we have so many splendid friends, where we have a really great home (I doubt we'll ever have such a cool house again), and where we have so many opportunities to do the things we love?
We've asked ourselves those "why" questions, and we've answered them for others as we say good-bye.
It's not "Why leave Ukiah?" for us so much as "Why move to SLO?" My answers:
1. We'd like to live (and one day retire) to a town close to the ocean.
2. We'd like to live and retire somewhere with relatively mild temperatures year-round.
3. We'd like to live and retire in a city with a four-year college or university.
4. We'd like to live and retire in a city with a well-established community theater.
5. We'd like to live in a larger town or city without it being a BIG city.
6. DAH would like to live in a place with lots of wineries (since that's how he makes his living).
7. We want to work (earn a living) in the community in which we will eventually retire.
SLO (San Luis Obispo) offers all those attractions. We think we have at least one more big adventure in us. Now seems like a good time to jump, together, into a new unknown.
